URGENT AND CRITICAL NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY
The establishment of a new Planned Parenthood surgical abortion clinic in Flossmoor, Illinois presents a serious threat to the health, well-being and lives of the women and unborn children in the south suburbs of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
Planned Parenthood has publicly stated that it has located in Flossmoor because it is in close proximity to communities with significant populations of women who receive Medicaid. It is important to note that, with the passage of Illinois House Bill 40 (HB40) last year, any woman who is receiving Medicaid coverage is able to get an abortion free-of-charge and at the taxpayer’s expense for any reason. Flossmoor’s location will also provide easier access to Indiana residents seeking abortion services in Illinois because of Indiana’s more restrictive abortion laws — such as a mandated waiting period and a ban past 20 weeks gestation.
Sadly, the facility is already fully operational. Many women have been seen going there on Fridays when abortions are offered and throughout the week for other services, such as the morning-after pill.
PLAN OF ACTION
The Southland Coalition for Life (SCL) has recently formed to provide women in unexpected pregnancies with the support and love to make life-affirming choices for themselves, their children and families. SCL conducted an extensive review of pregnancy help centers nationally and in the Chicago area and selected Aid for Women as its partner to establish a pregnancy help center in or near the Flossmoor area.
